“Off the Battlefield” Tour

Tour Marching Orders

Updated Wednesday, Aug 15, 2016

Date: 20 August 2016

Assembly Location/Time: Henry Hill Visitor Center, Manassas National Battlefield Park, 8:00 AM

Tour Duration: Tour expected to end about 5:00 PM

Cost: Free to All.   Carpooling from the Henry Hill Visitor Center parking lot is essential to minimize site congestion & maximize camaraderie.  We need to emphasize the need for everyone to arrive on time to we can depart the Henry Hill Visitor Center promptly at 8:30 a.m.  He may be able to utilize two of the park's vehicles, but the balance of the group will need to caravan in POVs.  Again, let's try to consolidate into the fewest number of vehicles possible.

Uniform of the Day: Dress for possible hot & humid weather, wear comfortable shoes; bug spray to deal with possible ticks, etc.

Lunch: Pack your own lunch, bring water to offset hot and humid weather.  Hank expects that our stop for lunch will be on the late side - perhaps past 1:00 p.m. - though this should not be a concern since everyone is bringing their own lunch and could eat at any time while en route.  One of our stops will be adjacent to a gas station and market, so there will be an opportunity to purchase additional refreshments along the way if needed. Restrooms are available at Jeffersonton Baptist Church and at the park where we will picnic.

Tour Features:  Because the Bull Run Civil War Round Table has held many tours of the Manassas battlefields, we chose to highlight sites near the battlefield that played a role before, during & after the battle.   Manassas National Battlefield historian Hank Elliot will lead a tour of the approximate route of Maj. Gen. T.J. “Stonewall’ Jackson’s Confederate troops covered on their historic 55-mile march to Manassas Junction.  The two-day flank march around Maj. Gen. John Pope's Union army cut the Union line of supply and communication with Washington and triggered the actions culminating in the Second Battle of Manassas.

Stops will include:
Fauquier Springs Country Club (pending approval) – (do not expect to visit here 8/15/16)
Jeffersonton Baptist Church
Waterloo Bridge
Thumb Run Baptist Church
Thoroughfare Gap
Bristoe Station
Manassas Junction

Because the Fauquier Springs is not available, we will make an introductory stop in Warrenton instead.  Little Georgetown has been added to our route which is a truly delightful site.  There is a possible additional stop nearer to Hinson's Mill Ford.  Waterloo Bridge is closed to vehicular traffic so we plan to discuss the events from the bridge over the Rappahannock River. An updated list of sites will be handed out before the tour. The tour will highlight locations and events in the Second Manassas Campaign that members have not seen before.

Tour Leader: Hank Elliot, Park Ranger/Volunteer Coordinator, Manassas National Battlefield Park.  Questions can be directed to Rob Orrison  rorrison@pwcgov.org .
